First of all, if anyone using Windows 8 Developer Preview, I strongly recommend to upgrade to Windows 8 Consumer Preview. The new version improved a lot and there are a lot of improvements. In term of Anti-Malware protection, for an operating system, you need protection against hackers, virus, worm, spyware, adware, phishing, Trojan and many other things. At this moment all supported version of Windows Operating (Windows XP SP3, Windows Vista, and Windows 7) comes with firewall and you don’t have to be worry about it. Regarding to attacks on the web such as phishing, you are protected as long as you use latest version of Internet Explorer. The only thing that remains is Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware program. Windows Vista and Windows 7 comes with Anti-Spyware out of the box, it is Windows Defender. Note that in these version of Windows Operating system, Windows Defender is only Anti-Spyware that protect you against Spyware, Adware and any program that damage your privacy , but it WILL NOT protect you against Virus, Worm, Trojan and other Malware. If you notice when you install Windows for first time, it will give you a message that no Anti-Virus been detected and you should get one. In Windows 8 Consumer Preview , it is similar to Windows 8 Developer Preview and you already have Anti-Malware protection that protect you against Virus, Worm, Spyware, Adware, Trojan and other threats. Note that Windows Defender in Windows Vista and Windows 7 is Anti-Spyware only and you need Anti-Malware protection too, but in Windows 8 Consumer Preview , Windows Defender is Anti-Spyware and Anti-Malware and you don’t need any additional protection. To make it simple, in Windows 8 Consumer Preview, you don’t need any other Anti-Virus protection like you needed in other version of Windows. Some of you might wonder why Microsoft Security Essentials in NOT compatible with Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Windows Defender in Windows 8 Consumer Preview is replacement of Microsoft Security Essentials and it has similar Malware protection engine.
