Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware

Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus bring up question in many users that what are differences. In technical term what we call is that we have risk and we categorize them to Malware and Non-Malware. In Malware we define as every object, code, script, program, application, registry key …, you name it that will harm your programs, system, hardware, software by doing damage of kind of stop working or don’t function and these types. Non-Malware also will harm but they goal is not damage to software or hardware, what they do is that they try to violence privacy or bother users such as sending thousands of email, it might not remove or damage your PC, but you have to remove them all or such as Spyware it might not do any harm to system but it will stole information. Sometimes, Non-Malware and Malware will work together to do something bad for example a Malware might stop firewall and then let Spyware get in . Sometimes in categorize Malware and Non-Malware, there are argument that it is not clear that a code or program or script … is act as Malware or Non-Malware, especially when it is combination of both Malware and Non-Malware. In what we call it for user, or what user need to know without argue about Computer Security and Scientific terms, is that we tell them to use Anti-Virus(or sometimes Anti-Malware) and Anti-Spyware. In general many of Anti-Virus software also will protect you against Spyware. Take note here that we say Anti-Virus, but it is not only Virus defend itself, Anti-Virus will refers to protecting against Worm, Trojan, Virus, Rootkit and some other Malware. It will be too long if we say you have to buy Anti-Virus, Worm, Trojan, Rootkit, Backdoor… We just say that you to buy Anti-Virus and it mean of these. Anti-Virus also refers to Anti-Spyware, which means that when you buy Anti-Virus, you will have Anti-Spyware too, but not always. You will see products that they say A Anti-Virus or B Anti-Virus and it is not common to see products that say an Anti-Virus/Spyware or B Anti-Virus/Spyware. But if you see description they said that we protect you against Virus, Worm, Trojan, Spyware, Adware…. . However, sometimes there are products in the Market that they protect you against Spyware and Adware and you need Anti-Virus to protect against Virus, Worm, Trojan….Let me explain this in an example. If you are using Windows Vista or Windows 7, you already have something called Windows Defender. It is an Anti-Spyware, what it does is that from its name it will protect you against Spyware and it Will NOT protect you against Worm, Virus, Trojan. What Windows Defender or any Anti-Spyware does is they protect your privacy. Some programs will stole your information and help hackers to get into your PC or stole your password and in general violence your privacy. Here Windows Defender will detect and remove them, but if application behave as Malware and harm system and will not stole or spy anything, Windows Defender could not help you, because it is Anti-Spyware NOT Anti-Virus. It is related to duty, duty of Anti-Spyware (such as Windows Defender) is to protect user from Application, Program, Code, Script… that will stole information or help bad guys to hack you or get into your PC. As you know if someone want to hack into your PC then should use and take advantage of certain program such as Remote Access Trojan , that help them to remote to your PC without your permission. It is what Anti-Spyware does and detects it and removes it. Anti-Virus will protect against Virus , Trojan, Spyware and other Malware, note here Remote Access Trojan is behave as Spy and it is consider as Spyware category and might not harm your PC . Here I want to take a note, what I mean of harm, is physical or logical damage to software, system, application…, I know that violence privacy and stole information is also harm, but here what we mean of harm is things like program stops, several error and things that make you trouble to fix them such as Windows won’t boot up (start) after you install something and non-privacy harms. Microsoft put Windows Defender in Windows in order to protect user privacy and stop hackers. When Windows Defender is on and Windows Firewall is running bad guys could not use Hacktools or spyware to spy your PC and stole your personal information. Spyware could get into your PC just by visiting websites that you shouldn’t visit and download things that you shouldn’t download and when you run them your personal information, credit card number and many more things would send to bad guys by that program. Windows Defender will detect these as Spyware and remove them. But if something hurt your PC and not violence your privacy and don’t stole anything Windows Defender could not help, because its duty is to save your Personal Information and stop spies and hackers. Many users asked about Windows Defender and Microsoft Security Essentials, that should they run both or not. Microsoft Security Essentials contain Windows Defender on it, you will not see it as interface but in way of protection it is on it. In Windows Vista and Windows 7, Microsoft Security Essentials will disable Windows Defender because it already have Windows Defender inside it as detect, remove ,protect . Also Microsoft Security Essentials have all protection that a user need including Anti-Spyware and Anti-Virus. Therefore installing Microsoft Security Essentials is protect against Spyware and Virus and other risks such as Trojan, Rootkit, Adware, Backdoor, Worm, … .  What I could conclude here is this; Anti-Spyware will not protect you against Malware such as Trojan Worm Virus that damage and bring harm to System and Application instead of spying system. But it will protect you against Spyware.  Anti-Virus will protect you against Virus, Worm Trojan and all bad things, many of Anti-viruses will have Anti-Spyware inside them but some doesn’t have. As a user don’t confuse, when you want to buy Security product ask this question: What are things that it will protect me and what are things that could not protect me? protection here means Malware and Non-Malware, ask that the Security Product will protect against Worm, Virus , Trojan and Malware and Also Spyware, Adware and Spy software or not? You should make sure you have all protection such as Virus, Worm, Trojan, Spyware and Adware and more. I want to give you real world example, In your country you probably have Intelligence Service or Secret Service that deal with spies and intelligence issues and military that deal with enemy and military attack. You could not ask intelligence officer to take a gun and go in front line of War and attack enemy. Also you could not ask Military to find spies. They have different duties, one to defend and attack enemy by force and another to deal with secret information and Spies. Anti-Spyware is your Intelligence Service and Anti-Virus is your Military or sometimes Military and Intelligence Service (as I said Anti-Virus usually contain Anti-Spyware, but in some cases does not, you should make sure that you have Spyware and Malware, Virus, Worm, Trojan… protection).  In order to have safe country and defend enemy you need Intelligence Service and Military. In order to have secure computer, you need have Anti-Virus and Anti-Spyware. Where is enemy? Everywhere in Cyberworld.  Remember check and make sure you have all Security that you will need (Anti-Spyware, Anti-Virus, Anti-Rootkit, Anti-Worm, Anti-…).
